Galway United's clash with Drogheda United postponed after two positive Covid-19 tests

Galway United's League of Ireland First Division clash with Drogheda United has been postponed after two Galway squad members tested positive for Covid-19.

The two cases are the first confirmed in the SSE Airtricity League since its resumption in July following a four-month suspension due to the pandemic.

The match had been scheduled to take place at Eamonn Deacy Park this Friday and a new date for the fixture has yet to be announced.

A statement confirmed: "Two positive COVID-19 cases have been identified in the Galway United squad and as a result the whole first team squad and staff are now restricting their movements and awaiting tests, following HSE and government guidelines.

"Galway United will continue to follow all protocols relating to COVID-19 and the players will isolate for the required period of time.

"The new date for the fixture will be announced in due course."

News of the domestic league's first positive cases comes after the Republic of Ireland camp was rocked by a positive test result for a member of the team's non-playing support staff.

The positive test came to light on Sunday evening after routine Covid testing of all the Ireland players, management team and FAI staff ahead of the game.

Two more FAI staff members have had to restrict their movements as a result and will not be flying to Slovakia this afternoon either.
