Galway's Joe Canning to be fit for Leinster Championship after injury scare

Joe Canning should be fit for the start of Galway’s Leinster Championship campaign after sustaining a leg injury in the League semi-final defeat to Waterford.

Canning was stretchered off late on after a lengthy stoppage in his side’s two-point loss at Nowlan Park having been floored, legitimately, by a shoulder from Waterford’s Kevin Moran as he soloed through on goal.

It gave rise to fears that the injury was particularly serious and though Galway manager Micheal Donoghue suggested that the problem might have been with his groin after the game, it transpires that he has only suffered a dead leg.

That would be enough to keep him out of action for a few weeks but with Galway not opening their Championship campaign until May 12, when Carlow visit Pearse Stadium, there appears to be no reason why the 30-year-old won’t have regained full fitness by then.

Donoghue wasn’t happy with some of the challenges that Canning was on the receiving end of over the course of the game on Sunday and commented afterwards: “He took a few heavy hits on it and I’d be intrigued to watch it back and see the hits he got going into it, just before it.

“There’d be one in particular I’d be interested to see back. I’d like to see it - and I’d say it would be quite obvious.”
