A Galway pub has responded after receiving backlash for the name of their new cocktail.
Rúibín's cocktail bar in Galway city centre have received angry comments on social media after posting their new Autumnal cocktail menu on their Facebook page.
The cocktail that drew ire from some was the 'Rúibín Holy Water' which one comment called "disgraceful". Galway Beo reports.
The cocktail, which is a blend of Hennessey, spiced rum, grapefruit, lime, peychaud's bitters and plum, clarified with milk, is served with a piece of sacramental bread on the side.
"This is a disgrace" one comment read on the pub's Facebook post. For Catholics the Eucharist is sacred.
"Your mockery is deeply upsetting."
Another said: "Have you a Muslim cocktail version or is it just Christians you are out to insult?" while one comment called the cocktail "blasphemous".
Meanwhile, other commenters came to the defence of the pub, with one commenter saying: "If a very very small number of people are getting upset about a little gimmick every now and then, they need to find some new hobbies."
Another joked: "In fairness to Rúibín Bar & Restaurant, I'm 100% sure their Holy Water Cocktail with Communion on the side is much tastier than the actual Altar Wine they serve up on stage in your local Catholic Church.
"I should know; I've tasted it in my local Sacristy."
When contacted for comment, Rúibín's manager, who is Catholic, told Galway Beo the naming of the cocktail was simply "a bit of craic".
