Galway manager Kevin Walsh backed to the hilt by players after Championship exit

Galway manager Kevin Walsh wouldn’t reveal his plans for 2020, but he was backed to the hilt by his players after their disappointing exit to the championship.

Injury woes have been a constant issue in 2019 but Walsh urged his players to ignore ‘the agendas’ of sections of the media.

“I am not going to get into (my future). We have to make sure this group go out together, hold their heads high and not listen to crap outside,” said Walsh.

“That game was there for winning. And a few awful decisions which put us on the back foot as well.

“I know referees are under serious pressure but there is agendas probably being driven by the top, it probably puts pressure on them to make all the silly decisions.

“We asked them for a performance, we asked them to die with their boots and we are gone out of the championship. It’s really frustrating.”

It was a horror year for Damien Comer as captain and he is keen to see Walsh back next season.

“I think it’s pretty embarrassing the press that he has got over the last few years,” said Comer.

“If you had seen the way Galway football was when he came in and where it is now, I think it is great credit to the man and I don’t think he is in any ways deserving of the harsh criticism.

“We know as a group the work he has done and we’re very proud of where we have come from and where we are going to go to.”
