Galway man's hell after driveway swept away in Clifden floods

A Galway man was left stunned after his driveway was ripped up and swept away by devastating flooding on Wednesday.

Pat Guy, from Clifden, told of his shock as a wall of water burst through his fence and destroyed the driveway.

Shocking photos show exposed pipes and piles of rocks, boulders and debris where his driveway used to be.

Damage can be seen to Mr Guy's fence at the rear of the property also with several slats missing.

A enormous hole gapes at the end of the drive where it meets the road and the damage makes it impossible for a vehicle to enter.

However, Mr Guy was relieved his home managed to withstand the floods.

"It's absolutely completely gone, everything is gone on the drive but the house is still here. I'm a happy boy", he told RTE News.

Frightening footage showed the extent of the flooding as the Owenglin River burst its banks.

The video, posted to Twitter, shows the river rushing through a bridge at the south side of the town while the nearby Connemara Pony show field was completely underwater.

Emergency services closed off multiple roads in the area as Met Eireann forecast further flooding in the north-west of Ireland today.

Two schools were also closed.

Gardaí advised Scoil Mhuire and Clifden Community School to shut with immediate effect.

The students were let go in a staggered release to make sure Covid-19 restrictions are adhered to.

A number of houses in the Clifden area have been evacuated by the fire service rescue teams after the Owenglin river overflowed, Galway Bay FM reports.

Several properties in Clifden were also flooded.
