Galway hurler Conor Whelan calls on health minister to tackle under-funding of mental health services

Galway hurler Conor Whelan is calling on the health minister to address under-funding for mental health services.

The GAA star, who is an ambassador for the charity Jigsaw, challenged Stephen Donnelly to end mental health waiting lists.

Conor tweeted about his concerns and the struggles people are experiencing in the pandemic. He wrote: “Unfortunately, Covid-19 has taken the lives of nine people in Galway to date.

“Since June 1, 12 people have taken their own life. 21 so far this year. Why is mental health just left on the sidelines?

“Suicide is a pandemic in its own right. The coronavirus is placing further stress on people who struggle with their mental health yet there is nothing being done to address the issue.

“Silently, people continue to suffer.”
