Galway garda explains 'tiny adjustments' that helped him lose seven stone in six months

A Galway garda has told how "tiny adjustments" to his diet helped him lose seven stone in six months.

Stephen Griffin, 28, decided to change the way he was eating after seeing a photograph of himself while on holidays.

After years of staying fit, the Connemara man's eating habits spiralled out of control after falling out of love with playing sports.

He said: "My eating habits were so bad... I was brutal for literally being so lazy that I wouldn’t be bothered going into Dunnes or Tesco.

"I’d rather sit there on an app and get food delivered to the house. My self-confidence and self-esteem were ground zero.

Irishman who lost 14 stone gives his weight loss secrets after turning life around

"I was consuming something stupid, like 4000 calories a day... And I was drinking a lot of liquid calories. I was clocking up 1,000 calories a day on Cokes and coffee.

"I had to stop shopping in actual shops and shop online. In the shops they might go up to a large or an XL but I needed a XXL or a XXXL."

But after seeing a photo of him looking overweight while on holidays in August, 2018, he said it was the "straw that broke the camel's back".

After being the subject of a "crap joke at work" he began his fitness journey alongside personal trainer Paul Dermody.

He cut down from his 4,000 calories a day diet, and began making "tiny adjustments" to his everyday routine.

He told the Irish Sun: "It sounds so simple and people hate to hear it, I would have hated to hear it, it was just a case of eating less calories than I needed and just moving.

"Often I’d come in from work at five, and sit on the couch until nine or ten eating, generally really high calories foods and then just go to sleep.

"Now I’m getting in, throwing on trackies and heading for a walk. I walk to the butcher; I walk to the coffee shop. It’s tiny adjustments."
