Galway footballers latest panel hit with Covid-19 outbreak as Moycullen withdraw county players

Galway footballers have become the latest panel to be hit with a Covid-19 outbreak with Moycullen withdrawing their county contingent.

The club won the first county title in its history earlier this month but a local outbreak has spread to their senior football team, including some that are part of Galway senior and under-20 panels.

As a result, all of their county players have been pulled out, meaning that they will miss the weekend’s Allianz League clash with Mayo as well as the All-Ireland under-20 semi-final against Kerry.

“Moycullen GAA players are unavailable to Galway football at the moment as they are following public health advice to restrict their movements as close contacts,” said a Galway spokesperson. “There will be no further comment from Galway GAA ahead of this weekend’s action.”

Moycullen chairman Paul Clancy, a former Galway footballer, pointed out in a statement how they had “cancelled club celebrations after our county final victory” for fear of spreading the virus.

Elsewhere, a Fermanagh request to have Sunday’s Allianz League Division Two tie with Clare in Ennis postponed will be considered by the Central Competitions Control Committee tomorrow, though it is unlikely to receive a favourable response.

Should the request be turned down, the Fermanagh players will then consider whether or not they will fulfil the fixture after a coronavirus outbreak within the panel spread to 10 players and leaves several more having to isolate right up to Sunday’s game.

The CCCC had been due to meet today but it was deferred as GAA officials awaited developments in Northern Ireland, with Stormont leaders considering their next move as the virus continues to spiral out of control in the six counties.

Additionally, Longford have asked the CCCC that their Division Three tie with Derry on Saturday be moved from Celtic Park given the high incidence rate of the virus in Derry City, though while the game is unlikely to be taken out of the county, it may be shifted to Owenbeg.

Wexford footballers have also been hit with an outbreak in the panel though it is expected that they will have enough players available to allow them to fulfil their Division Four tie with Limerick in Rathkeale on Sunday.
