Galway’s Gary O’Donnell has announced his retirement from inter-county football.
The defender, who featured mostly at right half-back or centre-back, captained the side for a number of seasons, the high point of which was lifting the Nestor Cup in 2016 as Galway became Connacht champions for the first time in eight years.
He also won provincial titles in 2008, his first year on the panel albeit he was injured when they beat Mayo in the final, and 2018.
Although hailing from the hurling stronghold of Gort, O’Donnell gravitated towards football given his family background, with Galway great Jarlath Fallon his first cousin, and he eventually transferred to Tuam Stars in 2009.
Confirming his retirement in a social media post, O’Donnell said: “Time has come to call it a day with Galway GAA. Lived it and loved it all. So many to thank but I will get to you all in time. Life goes on. Gaillimh go deo.”
