Galway fans 'thrilled' as Henry Shefflin confirmed as new senior hurling manager

Galway fans are thinking that 2022 can't come quick enough after Henry Shefflin was appointed the county's senior hurling manager.

The game's most decorated player with 10 All-Ireland titles and 11 All-Stars with Kilkenny, the Tribesmen shocked the hurling world as he was sworn in as manager.

'King' Henry was not rumoured to be in contention for the job, but comes with a fledging managerial career after guiding his native Ballyhale Shamrocks to two All-Ireland Club titles.

And as news filtered through on Wednesday, some Tribe fans couldn't contain their excitement at Shefflin's appointment.

"Hopefully he’ll bring more All Ireland’s west a lot quicker than a 29-yrs gap like the last one (88 to 17). I’ll be 71 in 2046, I can’t wait that long," one fan joked.

A fan added: "Here's hoping Henry Shefflin is a big success as Galway Senior Hurling Manager".

"I'm thrilled that Henry Shefflin is taking over as Manager of the Galway Senior Hurling Team. It augurs well for these talented Galway hurlers," one said.

One fan joked: "Henry Shefflin comes to Galway. The boom is back!".

The 42-year-old will have Richie O’Neill, who has worked with him in club management, as his coach, while the rest of his backroom team will be confirmed in the coming weeks.

After a lengthy process to find Shane O’Neill’s successor, it represents quite the coup for Galway to have secured the services of someone of Shefflin’s stature, with the Ballyhale man widely seen as Brian Cody’s successor in waiting in his native county.

But it appears as though he will be with Galway for the foreseeable future and instead plotting Kilkenny’s downfall.

In a statement issued by Galway GAA which confirmed the appointment, Shefflin said: “Managing the Galway senior hurlers represents a unique opportunity and we relish the exciting challenge ahead as we begin this journey. We look forward to working with the players, the county board and the wider Galway GAA community over the coming years.”

The Galway statement added: “The appointment of Henry Shefflin to lead our flagship team underpins both our immediate ambition for Galway hurling as well as a commitment to building a sustainable development pathway for our young hurlers."
