Galway castle named most popular Airbnb in Ireland

A medieval castle in Co Galway has been named the most popular Airbnb listing in Ireland.

The charming castle in the west dates back to the 15th century.

The medieval "Cahercastle" in Craughwell is located just 25 minutes from Galway City.

It has been restored by its current owners using traditional stones and woods to bring it back to its former glory.

However, the utilities and services inside the building have been brought up to the 21st century, with features like solar water heating.

The hosts, Peter and Ava, make some admissions in the ad due to the castle’s old age but they feel its uniqueness is its prime selling point. “It's not pristine, its not perfect, but it's a real castle.”

The listing, which is priced at €160 per night, is also in a desired part of the country for tourists, being within a half hour’s drive from the cultural city of Galway.

Online hospitality phenomenon Airbnb has checked in at a massive half a billion guests since its foundation more than 10 years ago.

The company, which provides its service on a website and an app, has taken the global hospitality sector by storm - with six million listings and three guest bookings per half second.

Airbnb is currently in 191 countries and 81,000 cities across the globe and has more listings than the six largest hotel groups combined.

Europe is the top continent for Airbnb guests, accounting for 45% of all bookings with almost 750,000 guests arrivals in any giving night.

Speaking on the announcement, Head of Airbnb in Ireland Aisling Hassell said: "This milestone is a testament to the revolutionary people-power of the Airbnb community.

"Hosts are continuing to transform the hospitality sector, offering guests authentic experiences in local communities and helping to create meaningful memories. This is an incredible achievement by hosts and guests in Ireland and across the world.”
