Galvis goes deep as Phillies halt 6-game losing streak

MIAMI _ Freddy Galvis sat in a barbershop for four hours last week as his hair was braided into dreadlocks. The shortstop was stuck in a wicked slump. Perhaps it was time for a change.

And it was the new-look Galvis who sparked a 6-2 win over the Marlins on Monday afternoon. The Phillies started their seven-game road trip with a win after losing six straight at home. They looked on their way to another listless loss until Galvis hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning. He scored twice and kept a seventh-inning rally alive when he reached on an error.

Galvis' home run _ which was just the team's second hit _ was the shortstop's 16th of the year after he hit just 17 homers combined over the previous three seasons. He is just the third shortstop in team history to hit 16 or more homers in a season, joining Jimmy Rollins and Granny Hamner.

The Phillies rallied to scored five more times after Galvis' homer. They found their swings just in time to help Jerad Eickhoff earn his 10th win. Eickhoff allowed two runs in six innings, struck out four and did not issue a walk. He settled in after a two-run first inning and allowed just two hits in his final four innings. The 26-year-old is the youngest Phillies pitcher to win 10 games since 23-year-old Vance Worley won 11 in 2011.

Galvis' homer in the fifth was followed by a triple from Peter Bourjos, who scored on a grounder by Cesar Hernandez. Bourjos drove in a run with a single in the seventh and then scored with Galvis on a pinch-hit single by Jimmy Paredes. Bourjos, who batted behind Galvis, finished 3 for 4 for his first three-hit game since July 4. All six of the team's runs were scored by their sixth, seventh and eighth hitters.
