Galston school gets positive report from Education Scotland

A Galston school has been given a positive report from education inspectors.

St Sophia’s Primary was graded ‘good’ in a report recently released to parents.

Education Scotland inspectors ran the rule over the Catholic school in November last year with a number of aspects being praised.

Key indicators – ‘learning, teaching and assessment’ and ‘raising attainment and achievement’ – were among the positive aspects.

Head teacher Elizabeth Heron was singled out for praise in the document.

The report states: “The leadership of the head teacher in embedding a caring, nurturing culture where children and families feel valued and supported. Children are keen to learn and motivated to do well.

“The head teacher has developed effective processes to monitor children’s individual progress in numeracy and literacy.

“The electronic records are accessed and used effectively by all staff.”

The report goes on to say that pupils are happy and well-mannered in the school, with strong community links enhancing learning.

The report continues: “Led by the head teacher, staff have created and embedded a positive nurturing ethos across the school.

“Children and their families are respected and valued by all staff.

“There are positive relationships across the school community, underpinned by Gospel values.

“Most children are happy and well-mannered in school. They are keen to learn and are motivated to do well.

“Most children engage well in their learning. When given opportunities to do so, most children work well in pairs and small groups to complete tasks.

“Teachers identify a range of cross-curricular opportunities for children to demonstrate skills, attributes and capabilities.”
