Galloway Mountain Rescue Team to climb height of Mount Everest for NHS

Seven members of Galloway Mountain Rescue Team are aiming to climb the height of the Mount Everest to raise funds for care services.

The group will attempt to collectively climb nearly 9,000 metres at their own homes on May 9.

One of the group, Ross McConchie from Dalbeattie, said: “Dumfries and Galloway Health board endowment fund raises money to make a real difference to patient care in our hospitals and communities.

“Critical care has been overwhelmed across the country during the coronavirus pandemic. We want to help give Covid-19 the boot so we would gratefully appreciate donations to help us raise funds for valuable resources for the critical care service of NHS Dumfries and Galloway.”

Mount Everest rises to 8848 metres above sea level, more than 12 times the height of Cairnsmore of Fleet.

The team will climb their own stairs or garden steps while carrying full rucksacks a total of 526 times.

The magnificent seven are Karen Brownlie from Carsluith, Pete Blackburn and Philip Anderson from Kirkcudbright, Matt Booth from Mossdale, Ross McConchie, Martin Warnock from Balmaclellan and Laura Ene from Dumfries.

They met around 18 months ago as mountain rescue trainees.

Karen added: “We all enjoy a challenge and felt that during this difficult time we could still make a difference and bring some positive spirit to our communities by completing this physical challenge.”
