Galloway Mountain Rescue team member calls in air ambulance for distressed walker on West Highland Way

A Galloway Rescue Team member called in an air ambulance for a walker in distress – on the West Highland Way between Fort William and Milngavie.

Pete Blackburn, of Tongland, was on day four of his marathon hike along the 96-mile route when he came across a woman collapsed on the path.

He alerted police and requested assistance from Killin Mountain Rescue team and a rescue helicopter from Prestwick.

Scottish Ambulance Service personnel assessed the casualty and made her as comfortable as possible before the woman was flown to hospital.

Retired police officer Pete, who returned home from the Highlands on Monday, told the News: “I came across two ladies just before Crianlarich.

“One had collapsed in the middle of the path and was in the condition of somebody about to have a heart attack.

“Two other people were there and they were just going to pick her up and walk off with her.

“I said I was a member of a mountain rescue team and that would be the wrong thing to do.

“So I got them to put up a pop-up tent and put her in the recovery position on a sleeping mat.

“She perked up a little just before the helicopter flew in but when they did an ECG on her heart they were not happy and airlifted her out.

“I walked the other woman off the hill to the path for Crianlarich. The casualty is fine and back at home. It’s a happy ending.”
