Galloway Glens Landscape Partnership receives £100,000 boost from Drax Group

A project aimed at protecting and promoting large parts of the Stewartry has been handed a cash boost.

The Galloway Glens Landscape Partnership has been given £100,000 by the Drax Group to be used over the next four years.

The energy company bought the Galloway Hydro Scheme, including Tongland Power Station, from Iberdrola earlier this year.

Galloway Glens chairman, Ted Leeming, said: “We aim to address the challenges faced by the area by harnessing the potential of local heritage sites like this one.

“We are developing education and training initiatives, supporting the tourism economy and encouraging young people to stay and work locally.

“We are delighted to be working in partnership with Drax. I look forward to welcoming them to the partnership board and their donation will turbo-charge our activities, putting Galloway on the map.”

The Galloway Glens project aims to promote the area’s heritage as well as boosting the local economy and supporting sustainable projects.

Head of Hydro at Drax Group, Ian Kinnaird, said: “We’re proud of the fact that the Galloway Hydro Scheme is considered a prominent feature of the local landscape.

“We look forward to helping to continue the good work of the Galloway Glens Scheme in this area.”

The Galloway Glens scheme started last year in the Dee and Ken valleys after being handed £2.7 million of Heritage Lottery funding.

The £5 million project is set to run until 2023.
