Gallons of water blast high into the air after water mains bursts in Pontardawe

A burst water main sent jets of water shooting into the air in a Swansea valley town.

A small number of properties were left without water on Wednesday afternoon as a result of the damaged water main on Cilmaengwyn Road, in Ynysmeudwy, Pontardawe .

A video shows plumes of water which reached several feet above the street.

A Welsh Water spokeswoman said: “We were alerted this afternoon to a damaged water main on Cilmaengwyn Road, Ynysmeudwy.

"This occurred while our contractor was carrying out work to repair a leak on the water main, and was reported to us immediately.

“A team are on their way to site to isolate the burst, and we anticipate that this will be done within the next hour.  We will then be in a position to assess the damage and repair the water main as soon as we can.

“We apologise for any inconvenience.”

Welsh Water said water supplies to a "very small number" of properties would be impacted while they carried out the repair - although the firm did not specify exactly how many.

"This should be for a short period of time and any customers affected have been contacted to inform them of the short interruption to supply," the statement continued.

A nearby resident said there was a lot of water and rocks were shooting up, adding they couldn't drive past it as the water was hitting their car's window.
