Gallery: Exhibition of art by adults with learning disabilities

Pip gallery: Pip
Tom Bettinson and his painting, Elephant. Tom, 26, has a learning disability and suffers from epilepsy. Elephant was created over more than a year as part of Pip’s art and disability project. During weekly sessions, Tom worked independently of the group to create this colourful and dynamic piece. As his focus on vivid geometric patterns grew, his confidence developed, and he requested a larger canvas on which to work. As the project’s conclusion approached, he worked around the clock, even taking the work home. Taking part in the project increased Tom’s independence and self-esteem and helped him to communicate through art. Photograph: PR
