Gallery: Exhibition of art by adults with learning disabilities

Tom Bettinson and his painting, Elephant. Tom, 26, has a learning disability and suffers from epilepsy. Elephant was created over more than a year as part of Pip’s art and disability project. During weekly sessions, Tom worked independently of the group to create this colourful and dynamic piece. As his focus on vivid geometric patterns grew, his confidence developed, and he requested a larger canvas on which to work. As the project’s conclusion approached, he worked around the clock, even taking the work home. Tom Bednson, is 26 years old, has a learning disability and suffers from epilepsy. ‘Elephant’ was created over more than a year as part of PIP’s art & disability project. Taking part in the project increased Tom’s personal independence, self- confidence and self-esteem. Creating ‘Elephant’ enabled Tom to communicate through art. Seahorse is by Danny Healy, 31. Danny, who has Down's syndrome, draws regularly and has developed a confident and very distinctive style. He created this piece while working on an underwater theme in Pip's creativity group. Photograph: PR

This piece is by Waiel Abdel-Rahman, 30. While working on it, Waiel, who has a learning disability and mental health issues, explored different surfaces and textures, building up layers of rich colour using a variety of methods. Photograph: PR

This subtle, beautiful image of a fish is by Juliet Raymond, 43. Juliet, who is highly autistic and has mental health issues, is an active member of Pip’s creatvity group. This painting was produced as part of the 'underwater' project. Photograph: PR
