Gallaudet football used brand-new 5G-powered helmets this week to help its deaf athletes

Gallaudet University, a school for deaf and hard of hearing students, and its football program teamed up with AT&T for a new pioneering helmet that will help the team better communicate on the field.

The new AT&T 5G Connected Helmet debuted on Saturday in Gallaudet’s game against Hilbert College.

Per a release, the new helmets utilize 5G technology and augmented reality to help make communication on plays from the Gallaudet sideline to huddle happen as seamlessly as ever.

“The helmet will allow coaches on the sideline to select a play from a tablet that will send the play to a lens inside the helmet,” the release reads. “The quarterback wearing the helmet will receive the play in augmented reality on the digital display located within the visor. AT&T 5G provides the reliability and low latency for plays to be sent and received at a speed that keeps up with the pace of the game.”

“We work out the same way as every other college football program, we practice the same way, we compete the same way,” Gallaudet coach Chuck Goldstein said in a release. “The difference between coaching a hearing team compared to a Deaf team is first the communication. The AT&T 5G-connected helmet will change football.”

In what’s a fantastic development for college football’s deaf and hard of hearing athletes, the new AT&T 5G Connected Helmets should continue to help make the sport more accessible for all athletes for years to come.

In the first game utilizing the new helmet technology, Gallaudet defeated Hilbert, 34-20.
