Gale force winds up to 50mph set to batter Merseyside predict Met Office

Gale force winds are set to batter the region again tonight, as Merseyside recovers from overnight bad weather.

Wednesday night saw sudden high winds hit Merseyside, whereas in other areas across the country weather warnings were issued.

In New Brighton the fierce weather caused The Black Pearl, in New Brighton, to be heartbreakingly destroyed.

Sharing tragic photos, it wrote on Facebook: "We've had to say goodbye to our Peal tonight. She was a grand and much-loved ship.

"An emergency Pirate meeting will have to be called at Pirate HQ to decide where we go from here."

One Twitter user also posted images of trees brought down in Knotty Ash .

Lisa wrote: "The wind tonight didn't seem this bad! People might want to avoid Milton Avenue/Campbell Drive in the morning, just in case it's not moved by then."

A very windy day has also been forecast for Thursday, with gale force winds expected later in the afternoon and evening.

The Met Office predict winds of 47mph could hit at 5pm, followed by a night of rain.

Forecasters said: "A mostly dry but windy day with sunny spells at first. Turning increasingly cloudy with showers developing towards late afternoon.

"Feeling chillier than recent days. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

"Scattered showers during the evening will ease later in the night.

"Clear spells will develop through the early hours accompanied by easing winds. Minimum temperature 2 °C."

And there will be no let-up by the weekend, as it's warned "strong winds" will hit on Saturday.

Forecasters added: "An unsettled weekend with rain and strong winds on Saturday.

"The wind and rain will ease through Sunday whilst Monday will be drier and brighter with a few sunny spells."
