Galaxy move for Zidane

The LA Galaxy general manager, Alexi Lalas, has confirmed the club have made an offer to Zinédine Zidane to join David Beckham at the club. "He's a great player and we'd love to have him" he said.

"We'll see what happens - you can tell he's looking for an opportunity, whether it's in LA or MLS [Major League Soccer] we'll see, but it would be wonderful to have a Beckham and Zidane team."

Brazil, the five-time record winners of the trophy, is in line to stage the 2014 World Cup finals after becoming the only remaining candidate following Colombia's withdrawal from the bidding. The Brazilians submitted bidding agreement forms yesterday, ahead of Monday's deadline, while Fifa confirmed that the Colombian Football Association had pulled out. No reasons were given for the decision.

Despite this seeming a one-horse race Brazil, which hosted the event in 1950, must meet technical requirements, provide government guarantees and complete its bid by the end of July.

Diego Maradona was readmitted to hospital, and reportedly taken into intensive care, in Buenos Aires yesterday, only two days after being discharged following two weeks of treatment for over-indulgence in smoking, drinking and eating. The former Argentina captain had been expected to travel to La Prairie clinic in Switzerland to continue his treatment.
