A new sequel to "Ginga Tetsudo 999" ("Galaxy Express 999"), the best-known creation of cartoonist Leiji Matsumoto, will be released on Wednesday.
The new work will be carried in a book titled "Matsumoto Leiji Mugen Sozo Kido" (Leiji Matsumoto endless creation track), which will be published by Shogakukan Inc. to mark Matsumoto's 80th birthday. It is the first revival in 11 years of this masterpiece of sci-fi manga, which triggered an animation boom beginning in the 1970s.
"Galaxy Express 999" depicts a young boy named Tetsuro Hoshino who travels in space via the galaxy express train 999 with mysterious beauty Maetel. The work was serialized in the weekly boy's manga magazine "Shukan Shonen King" from 1977 to 1981, and sequels have been created on an irregular basis.
The last sequel was released in 2007 to mark the series' 30th anniversary.
According to Shogakukan, the title of the new 32-page work is "Dream Black Hall." It depicts the beginning of a new journey by Tetsuro and Maetel, who board the 999 to explore the mystery of the "dark tunnel" that has appeared in the galaxy.
"999 is the story of a journey that has no end in sight. This story is merely the beginning of a new story. I hope people look forward to what awaits them on their journey," said Matsumoto, expressing his enthusiasm for creating the sequel.
