Galatasaray and Benfica in talks over Gedson Fernandes loan deal following Tottenham nightmare

Gedson Fernandes' frustrating time at Tottenham Hotspur could soon be about to come to an end.

After making the move to north London this time last year on an 18-month loan deal from Benfica, the Portuguese midfielder has only played in 14 games for Spurs over the past 12 months.

Behind a number of players in the pecking order in the capital, the youngster has only been included in the matchday squad in the league on three occasions this term, with his only two appearances in 2020/21 coming in the cup.

Amid talk of an early return back to Benfica this month due to a lack of match action, it now appears that Gedson is heading on his way to Galatasaray before the January transfer window closes for business on Monday evening at 11pm.

A statement on the Turkish club's website read: "Official negotiations have started with football player and club SL Benfica regarding the temporary transfer of professional football player Gedson Carvalho Fernandes to our club."

Given his chances of regular game time are extremely unlikely to improve at Tottenham from February onwards, a switch to Galatasaray could get his career back on track after such a frustrating year for the player in London.

Despite his lack of football over the past 12 months, Mourinho told football.london back in December that the midfielder had never kicked up a fuss and continued to train day in, day out at Hotspur Way.

"If he remains at the club from January, I cannot answer you. I truly believe that we have to respect the player and Benfica," explained the 58-year-old.

"The player because he deserves all our respect and Benfica because as a friendly club deserves our respect.

"So what they decide is fundamental and what they decide will prevail. The situation is sad because he was out of the Europa League list and by being out of that list reduced immediately a chance of nine matches that we already played in the Europa League, where we had five substitutions where we rotated the players a lot and we can bring to the bench 12 players.

"To be out of these nine matches I believe that breaks confidence levels and even dynamics and routines and was very bad for him.

"Apart from that, then you go to the Premier League where he can play, but by having in the Premier League only until now six guys on the bench and the keeper I think it's normal you go for players with more routine and match fitness.

"So these six months become really, really bad for us and for him and on top of it he's a kid, it's incredible what I'm going to say, but since he arrived he didn't miss one single minute of one training session so he becomes even in low levels of happiness or motivation he's managing to be a very good professional.

"So hopefully better days will come for him and they will come for sure, with us or without us, but better days will come for sure."
