Galal Yafai wins Team GB's first boxing gold at Tokyo 2020 with dominant final display

Galal Yafai delivered British boxing's first gold medal at Tokyo 2020 when he outpointed Philippines flyweight Carlo Paalam 4-1 on the judges' scorecards.

Despite their best medal haul for 101 years – six in all – Team GB's contingent from the noble art had not managed to turn any of their precious metals into gold.

But Yafai, a dynamic and waspish competitor from a famous fighting family, hit the podium summit with a superb display.

In a previous incarnation, he was a shop floor worker at the Land Rover plant in Solihull – but now he has gone from spare part in giant car factory to a gleaming model in the showroom.

It means the Brits have won at least one gold medal at each of the last four Olympics in Beijing, London, Rio and Tokyo.

And it is a tribute to the work of head coach Rob McCracken, who took over 11 years ago and guided Anthony Joshua into the heavyweight big time.

At 28, Yafai must now decide whether to follow his brothers into the professional ranks, where they were great achievers who did not always gain the wider recognition they deserved.

Kal Yafai held the WBA super-flyweight belt for four years from 2016-20, while Lalal Yafai is a former Commonwealth and European super-bantamweight champion.

Birmingham-born of Yemeni stock, Yafai has modelled his fighting style on another boxing pioneer with roots on the Arabian peninsula, Prince Naseem Hamed, who held multiple world featherweight titles between 1995-2000.

Brash, busy and assertive, he put Paalam on the deck with a brilliant combination midway through the first round to take charge.

The Filipino refused to come quietly, and was warned for excessive use of the head in the second, but Yafai came safely through the decider to clinch Team GB's 19th gold of the Games, equalling their haul of bullion in Beijing 13 years ago.
