Gaizka Mendieta challenges Rangers to 'make statement' as UCL 'misses Gers'

Former Valencia star Gaizka Mendieta has challenged Rangers to make a statement this summer with their transfer business - because he says the Champions League "misses" the club.

The Light Blues have been forced to play in the Europa League in recent seasons which, while still an established and elite competition, is second to the top table of the UCL.

Spaniard Mendieta, 52, feels Rangers are too impressive a club to sit on the sidelines with the Ibrox atmosphere, the former defender says, among the best.

That's why the two-time Champions League runner up has urged Gers to have a strong transfer window to compete with rivals Celtic again.

"Rangers had a tough time last season with so many changes, but they managed to improve towards the end," he told BetVictor. "This summer is important because they need to make a statement, especially since Celtic won the title.

"Rangers and their fans will be looking to spend.

"It is a domino effect. We miss seeing them in European football because of their history and the incredible atmosphere they bring to games which I saw first hand, so let’s hope they can start to make an impact again."

Gers have already done some big business in the market thus far with as many as eight new signings in the door.

Manager Derek McInnes also wants another winger.
