Gaizka Mendieta brands Rangers clash 'favourite' as Valencia legend blown away by Ibrox atmosphere

Gaizka Mendieta has branded a trip to face Rangers as his favourite ever in the Champions League.

The Valencia legend is regarded as one of the finest midfielders to have played the game and arrived in Scotland with the Spanish giants when they drew Rangers in Europe.

He scored the opening goal in a 2-1 win for Valencia in 1999, but it was the noise of the stadium that has stuck with him ever since.

Ibrox was bouncing on that particular night and it's fair to say it's stuck with Mendieta ever since.

He was doing a quick-fire questions interview with the outlet Joe.co.uk and he was asked what his favourite trip in the Champions League was.

And he didn't even need a second to think about it as he immediately said: “It might not be the place where a lot of people think of, but Glasgow.

“We played against Rangers in the first year with Valencia, you could hear the sound of the crowd, the people in the stadium, from the dressing room.”

Rangers have only faced Valencia in the Champions League in one campaign since then, during the 2010/11 season under Walter Smith.

They drew 1-1 at Ibrox before the Premiership champions suffered a 3-0 defeat in Spain.
