Gaetano Berardi believes Leeds United are taken more 'serious' than last year, which has culminated in the second-season struggles.
After finishing ninth in their debut Premier League season, the Whites have struggled this term and sit in the bottom half of the division.
Injuries and defensive problems have culminated in a few nervous glances towards the relegation zone.
More commonly known as 'second-season syndrome', Berardi believes teams in the Premier League are paying United more respect.
"It's not easy playing in the Premier League, it was a great season for Leeds," Berardi told The Square Ball.
"It was a new experience for everyone and the players. The second year, they know Leeds United, they know how they play. They take Leeds more serious than last year.
"The second year for the promoted teams is not easy. You can see they are in a good position, the gap is good. It's a part of the season where you have to fight to keep the position.
"The good thing is there is still a positive way to see it. I went to see everyone before Christmas, the welcome was unbelievable.
"It was nice to see the full crowd, a full stadium, to see everyone at the training ground."
The Swiss defender has signed for FC Zion in his home country after leaving Elland Road in the summer.
"It's a good chance for me, a big chance," Berardi said.
"I spoke with the club before Christmas and he asked me how I feel. He knew I was not playing with anybody.
"He invited me for a train session and after four weeks I signed. I came to the club at a good level because I worked well in the last six months.
"I came to Zion and I was feeling well, I did what I had to do. It's a different league, different teams.
"The level is different. The Super League in the last 10 years has improved a lot, we've seen good teams playing Europa League, Champions League.
"It's a good chance for me to play in this league and play at a good level."
