Gaelic coffee morning in Castle Douglas paves the way for language classes

A coffee morning looks set to have paved the way for Gaelic classes in Castle Douglas.

The Gàidhlig Dumgal group organised the get together in the Gordon Memorial Hall on Saturday morning to gauge interest in the possibility of launching classes in the new year.

And they were delighted that around 25 people turned up to enjoy refreshments and Gaelic and Scots tunes and songs from Barbara Lewis and her young musicians.

The group’s Andrew Wilson said: “It is heartening to see there is interest and affection for Scots Gaelic and contrary to what many believe it was once widely spoken in Galloway, evidenced by the huge number of Gaelic language place names we have.

“The trouble is folk tend to know absolutely nothing about this. It is always difficult finding someone to teach a class; native speakers are few and far between, but we have an experienced learner lined up.

"I myself learnt Gaelic as an adult and it has been one of the best things I ever did.”
