A YEAR ago, two dedicated educators from the Isle of Skye won a top award for their invaluable contribution to Gaelic in Scotland.
Now the search is on to find this year’s winners as the Record proudly launches the seventh Gaelic Awards.
There are 10 categories recognising contributions to Gaelic life, including a Young Gaelic Ambassador of the Year and an International Award. Last year, Professor Boyd Robertson and John Norman MacLeod were given the Best Contribution Award for the promotion of Gaelic education, language and culture over many years and, in particular, for their work at the Gaelic college, Sabhal Mor Ostaig.
John has seen more than 1000 students graduate from the college in the 35 years he worked there, 20 of them as head of studies.
In the nine years Boyd was principal, the college won international recognition for Gaelic research and scholarship.
He also helped develop Kilbeg village – the first new planned village on Skye in nearly 100 years.
The development enlarged the college estate and provided new facilities for students and partner organisations. Both men retired last year.
John said: “These awards are an important way to recognise the college’s achievements and highlight how more and more people are learning the language.
“There is a more positive attitude to Gaelic medium education in Scotland now.”
- The awards are on November 19 at the Glasgow Marriott Hotel. Closing date for nominations is September 25. www.scottishgaelicawards.co.uk .
