Gadget Show's Georgie Barrat to host 2019 Hull & Humber Tech Awards

Star of Channel Five’s ‘The Gadget Show’ and tech journalist Georgie Barrat will host the 2019 Hull & Humber Tech Awards.

A familiar weekly face on television, Georgie also writes for a range of publications including Marie Claire, The Mirror, Metro & Tech City News and has spoken about tech for the likes of ITV, Channel Four and the BBC.

Georgie is ITV’s ‘Weekend’ resident tech expert, talking Aled Jones through the latest gadgets and gizmos, whilst also working alongside the production team to help source and create the feature.

She also regularly appears on Channel Five's 'The Saturday Show,’ commenting on the latest tech stories to hit the headlines.

Georgie has been announced as the host for the 2019 Hull & Humber Tech Awards.

The awards, hosted by Hull Live and KCOM, shine a light on the very best digital and tech firms across the region, and will this year be held on Wednesday, October 2 at Fruit in Humber Street.

Alan Worthing, KCOM’s director of business, said of the awards: “Hull’s reputation as one of the UK’s digital hotspots is truly deserved as it has become home to a flourishing tech sector, packed full of innovative and ground-breaking businesses.

“Underpinning this renaissance is KCOM’s £85m investment in its Lightstream full-fibre broadband network, which is now complete, connecting more than 200,000 properties across the region.

“This has put our region decades ahead of the rest of the country in terms of connectivity, positioning us alongside some of the most advanced tech nations in the world and enabling businesses to compete on a global level.

“We believe the future is bright for the Humber region and we’re delighted to be playing our part in making it happen.”

Stepping out of camera shot and behind a microphone, Georgie Barrat is also a regular guest on BBC’s radio show Tech Tent, discussing breaking tech stories for Radio Two and talking through the morning papers on talkSPORTS Breakfast Show.

Georgie is also passionate about getting more girls into coding, and works alongside two charities (STEMettes, Baytree Centre) to help encourage 11-14 year-olds to study STEM subjects at GCSE & beyond.

As a tech journalist, her mission is to do away with the male-skewed angle that tech is often portrayed in.

She graduated from Kings College London with a First in English Literature, has a Diploma in Radio Production and last summer learned how to code with the ‘Code First: Girls’ program.

Georgie has also completed the London Marathon and Tough Mudder for charity.

Entries are currently open for the 2019 Tech Awards.

There are 11 awards up for grabs this year, including Young Person in Tech, Fastest-Growing Tech Business and Best Team.
