Gabriel Martinelli's next mission at Arsenal is revealed after what happened against Man City

Gabriel Martinelli had an interesting afternoon, to say the least, as Arsenal kicked off the New Year with a defeat at the hands of Manchester City.

The Brazilian, who has been in excellent form since forcing his way into Mikel Arteta's strongest starting lineup in recent weeks, was one of several Gunners players to catch the eye against the Premier League leaders on Saturday.

His direct running and pressing from the front kept Joao Cancelo, in particular, on his toes in the first-half and it also forced a few decent openings to get on the scoresheet.

Martinelli's first effort curled just wide, his second effort - which came via sheer persistence - just evaded the far post, although he really should have scored with attempt number three.

A defensive mix-up involving Aymeric Laporte and Ederson resulted in the Spain international needing his blushes saved by a Nathan Ake goal-line clearance.

However, the ball dropped perfectly for Martinelli who somehow managed to hit the outside of the post with the goal at his mercy.

Now, there has been one popular theory amongst some Arsenal fans - and club legend Ian Wright about the miss with that being referee Stuart Atwell obstructed Martinelli's view right before shooting.

But others on Reddit and Twitter have come up with another theory for the miss.

All the chances mentioned fell on Martinelli's supposed weaker left foot, prompting some supporters to point out where the 20-year-old must improve.

@BloodBobAFC said: "Martinelli needs to work on his left foot ASAP."
