Gabriel Martinelli reveals national team decision and hints at dream Arsenal number

Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinell has revealed his decision on his international allegiances, bringing an end to the debate surrounding his future, and has hinted at a future change in numbers.

The Brazilian teenager has represented the South American side at youth level but holds an Italian passport, which aided his move to join Arsenal from Ituano.

Italy have reportedly kept close tabs on the forward in recent years and are said to have pushed for him to represent the European nation but Martinelli's recent comments have brought that debate to an end.

Asked by ESPN Brasil about his goals for the future, he said: "Now, get back to playing more. But surely in the future to win the Champions League, to win the World Cup and the Premier League with Arsenal. The World Cup with Brazil. My dream is to play for the Brazilian national team.”

Cedric happy to fill in where needed for Arsenal

Martinelli's goals for his time with the Gunners will appeal to the fans and he has also spoken about following in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's footsteps, sharing his admiration for his club captain.

"Of course, Auba is an incredible player. Not just a player, an incredible person. It’s a pleasure to have him in the team. He’s a guy who plays in my position. I can look at him every day and try to learn as much as possible.

“I certainly hope to be playing in the near future. And follow in his footsteps, he’s captain of the team, wearing shirt 14, which is a symbol of the club. I hope to have a bright future ahead at Arsenal.”

Martinelli's comment about the famous number 14 may indicate his plans to take the number in the future when Aubameyang's time with Arsenal comes to a close.

The Brazilian has worn the number 35 since moving to the Premier League but can expect to follow the likes of Bukayo Saka, who has taken the number seven shirt following his successful breakthrough.

Aubameyang is contracted to Arsenal until 2023 and Martinelli appears to have his eye on the number 14 shirt when it becomes available.
