Gabriel Martinelli outshines Alexandre Lacazette as Arsenal midfield gamble fails

Arsenal eventually came up short in their pursuit of a place in the League Cup final, as they went down 2-0 against Liverpool on Thursday.

The Gunners lacked the defensive solidity they showcased in the 0-0 draw in the first leg of the semi-final and in attack they struggled to find any spark despite manager Mikel Arteta naming a top-heavy XI.

It's a result that effectively ends the team's hopes of silverware this season after the FA Cup exit against Nottingham Forest.

Here are your latest Arsenal headlines after a disappointing night for the Gunners.

Does the defeat intensify Arsenal's need to sign a midfielder? Let us know in the comments section below!

Martinelli outshines Lacazette

Arsenal's attack has been purring as a unit in recent weeks, but on Thursday it only fizzed in fractured moments.

At the point of the attack Alexandre Lacazette offered no penetration and often found himself too deep to unsettle the Liverpool defence.

By contrast, Martinelli operated with a verve and directness on the left flank, giving Trent Alexander-Arnold a lot to think about from a defensive point of view.

Darren Wells took a closer look at the performance of both players, along with five other talking points from the match.

When he did get on the pitch if would be fair to say he looked short of his best and a rash challenge on Fabinho prompted a red card from referee Martin Atkinson.

It means that after missing games this month due to his involvement in AFCON, the former Atletico Madrid midfielder will now be absent for the weekend showdown with Burnley.

Conte reacts to Vlahovic rumours

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has said he's nonplussed by speculation suggesting Arsenal are set to win the race for Fiorentina forward Dusan Vlahovic.

The Serbian striker has been strongly linked with a move to both north London clubs in recent weeks and Gunners supporters are hopeful a transfer involving the 21-year-old could still be done this month.

That would be a blow to Spurs given Vlahovic's talent and the proximity of the outfit said to be winning the race for the striker. But Conte said there's not much he can do.
