Gabriel Martinelli avoids "heartbreaking" scenario in further boost to in-form Arsenal

Arsenal striker Gabriel Martinelli trained on Wednesday following his injury scare on Saturday which has avoided a "heartbreaking" scenario.

The Brazilian has only just returned following months out on the treatment table.

Martinelli proved to be a big hit in his debut season and was quickly restored to the starting XI.

But prior to Arsenal's FA Cup win at the weekend he went down injured in the warm-up and had to be replaced.

Arteta initially feared the worst but the teenager, who was missing for sixth months, is back with the squad.

Former Gunner Kevin Campbell is pleased to see the Brazilian back on his feet having claimed it would've been tough to see the striker suffering again.

He told Football Insider: “I wasn’t quite sure what the issue was.

“He has been out for such a long time that when he picks up an injury in the warm up you fear the worst.

“Fingers crossed he is going to be back in training this week so it does not look to be that bad. It is great news for the football club, great news for him and a relief for him.

“He put in so much work to get himself back fit, and he was so impressive against Chelsea, to get injured again would have been heartbreaking. I am really pleased for him.”

Arteta admitted that on Saturday night that Martinelli was in tears when he first suffered his knock.

"I am gutted. I was in my office before the game and one of the coaches came in and said that Gabi hurt himself, that he twisted his ankle," he said.

"I went to the medical room and he was in tears. It didn't look good. He was in a lot of pain and we're going to have to see how he is."
