Gabriel injury: Arsenal defender optimistic of overcoming ankle knock to make Newcastle trip

Arsenal defender Gabriel is hoping to be fit in time for Sunday’s crucial trip to Newcastle.

Gabriel took a knock to his ankle during Arsenal’s win over Chelsea on Tuesday and, after attempting to play through the pain, was eventually forced to come off.

Arsenal players underwent a recovery session on Wednesday before being given the day off.

With the Gunners now back at London Colney, Gabriel will be assessed over the next 48 hours with the Brazilian hoping he can be in the squad for Sunday’s game at St. James’ Park.

Arsenal are already short on centre-back options as William Saliba has been out since the middle of March with a back injury.

The Gunners are still fighting to win the title and currently trail leaders Manchester City by one point, but Pep Guardiola’s side have a game in hand.

City are in action tomorrow when they host Leeds, meaning Arsenal could be four points behind them by the time they kick-off at Newcastle on Sunday.

Newcastle have enjoyed a brilliant season and are currently on course to qualify for the Champions League.

Eddie Howe’s side are third in the table, six points clear of Liverpool in fifth place with a game in hand.
