Gabriel Agbonlahor says Leeds United must strengthen after Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford injury blow

Former Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor believes that Leeds United 'need to strengthen in January' after finding out about injuries to Patrick Bamford and Kalvin Phillips.

It has been a frustrating season on the treatment table for the Whites and these latest developments could prove to be another major blow as they try to stay in the Premier League.

On Thursday, Leeds revealed that Rodrigo has been suffering with bilateral heel pain for some time and the medical staff deemed it necessary to reduce his activity for the time being, while Robin Koch has overcome his pelvic injury, but has been ill for the last 10 days.

However, it's not good news for Bamford, who has suffered a hamstring injury during last weekend's 2-2 draw with Brentford despite only coming on for the final half an hour.

Meanwhile, Phillips and Liam Cooper also both suffered hamstring issues in Sunday’s game and have undergone treatment to aid their recovery.

Agbonlahor, who made over 200 Premier League appearances, admitted that Leeds have now got to invest to strengthen their squad to compete with some of the other clubs in the division.

Speaking about whether Bamford's celebration may have had an impact on the injury, Agbonlahor told talkSPORT: "We have said this a couple of months ago about some of them celebrations, especially the sliding on the knees. You are in danger of doing your knee ligaments.

"But when you are in that moment. You don’t think, do you? You just celebrate. It’s a bit of bad luck for him.

"I think with Leeds, they need to strengthen in January. I’m not sure if they have the funds available.

"But you have teams like Newcastle that are going to strengthen. Other teams are going to strengthen. You hear that Leeds don’t have the money.

"They need to invest with the injuries they have got. Bamford injured again, Phillips out for a while and they can’t just rely on Raphinha."

Leeds' attention now turns to this weekend's game against Chelsea, where they will be looking to stretch their unbeaten run to four matches in the Premier League.
