Gabby George outlines Everton aim ahead of 'tough' Sheffield United clash

Everton defender Gabby George has outlined her side's desire to get the three points when they take on Sheffield United in the Continental Cup this weekend.

The Blues picked up a crucial bonus point when they faced Aston Villa at Walton Hall Park on matchday one. Aggie Beever-Jones's strike cancelled out Natasha Harding's opener to see things end all square after 90 minutes, with Everton goalkeeper Emily Ramsey making two saves in the shootout to ensure a bright start to the Toffees' Conti Cup campaign.

Brian Sorensen's side can, at least temporarily, top their group with a victory over the Blades ton Saturday afternoon, and George is confident her side can avoid a third consecutive defeat when they visit the Women's Championship side at Glanford Park.

“It’s a game that we know is going to be a tough game," George told club media ahead of the clash. "All the games, cup and league, are tough but we want to go out there and get the three points and that’s what we’re going to set out to do.

"Hopefully we can put in a good performance and take the three points on the day."

George arrived on Merseyside in 2014, having come through Manchester United's Centre of Excellence. The defender made club history in 2017 when she signed a two-year contract as Everton's first full-time professional player.

Reflecting on the burgeoning success of the women's game throughout her time with the Toffees, George said. “I think year-on-year it gets better and better. I think the support this year has been phenomenal, home and away, and I think we’ve had them making new songs, we’ve had beer mats, jumpers, whatever it is so it’s been phenomenal this year and hopefully it can keep getting better and better."

George is the only Everton player to have started all of Everton's games this seaston, starring eight times in all competitions. And the 25-year-old's excellent form even saw England boss Sarina Wiegman call her up for the Lionesses' November friendlies following injuries to Jordan Nobbs and Lauren Hemp.

Looking back at her Everton career so far, George said: “I’ve been here for eight/nine years now which is a long time in women’s football to stay at one club so I have built a big relationship with the fans and they’ve supported me through it all and they’re still pushing us on to bigger and better (things). I think last season they stuck by us when it was difficult so we’re trying to give them something to cheer about this season.”

She added: “I’ve always wanted to be a role model for the little girls coming through because I’ve got two little sisters that I want to be an inspiration for so its just part and parcel of the game and I think we’re doing a good job of it.”
