Gabby George accepts Everton must improve to rescue disappointing season

Gabby George spoke to the Echo following the departure of Jean-Luc Vasseur after only 95 days in the job.

Assistant coach Chris Roberts has taken temporary charge and watched his side take the lead against Reading on Sunday, only to lose the match 2-1.

The results leaves the Blues 10th in the Woman's Super League with only 11 points and George accepts that things must get better.

She said: "It’s always disappointing when there is a change in manager, but the club made the decision to part ways with Jean-Luc and now we have to focus on our upcoming games. We have some important games coming up and we are focused on picking up positive results and working our way up the league table.

"Chris and Claire Ditchburn are leading the team in the interim while the club go through the process of appointing a new manager. There is no specific timeline, but this club has ambitions to be fighting at the top end of the table and competing in the Champions League so I’m sure the club will bring in the best manager to meet those ambitions.

"We’ve had a difficult season so far, we know results haven’t been good enough. We accept that, and we take responsibility for that but every single player in that dressing room is determined to put that right."

Away from league action, Everton had a better outcome in the FA Cup and recently put Huddersfield Town to the sword in a 4-0 victory that included a superb bicycle kick from Claire Emslie.

The Blues will now face Charlton Athletic in the next round at the end of the month and George believes that they can go deep in the competition.

She said: "We’ve got the quality in the squad to have a good cup run and pick up positive results in the league to help us climb the table.

"The FA Cup is a competition we want to win. We reached the final last year and this time we want to get back to Wembley and go that one step further.

"We got this year’s campaign off to a good start at Huddersfield but for now our focus is back on the league. We’ve got another home game coming up and we want to pick up three points before we head into the international break.

"I wasn’t surprised by the finish from Claire. She’s certainly got that in her locker! I see her day in day out in training and she always produces moments like that one at Huddersfield.

"She’s probably lost count how many times she’s watched that goal back! In all seriousness though, it was a great finish from Claire and I was made up for her to get that goal."

Before Chris Roberts' side resume their FA Cup journey, they will be looking to secure a vital three points against Aston Villa on Sunday, February 13, at Walton Hall Park – and Season Ticket, Lounge and Official Members can attend FOR FREE!
