A baseline screening of all county panels with a rapid result Covid-19 test is to be introduced next week.
The decision was made following talks over the last 24 hours between the GAA and the GPA, who had this week demanded regular testing for all squads - and threatened to reconsider its support for the 2020 championship season if it wasn't forthcoming.
The GPA wanted "immediate and decisive" action to be taken by Croke Park following the decision by a number of county teams not to fulfil fixtures this weekend.
But the GPA is now satisfied with assurances made by the GAA's Covid Advisory Group, with details to be finalised after the weekend's fixtures. Until then, the current system will be implemented if necessary.
The GAA is now in the process of sourcing a testing system and service provider.
But the GPA believes that it will be a saliva test that provides rapid results, and that positive cases identified will then be referred for a PCR test as used by other sports such as the Irish provinces in rugby.

Yesterday, Offaly gave Kildare a walkover in the Christy Ring Cup, and in the same competition, the Sligo hurlers today forfeited their fixture with Derry.
The latter situation arose as a member of the Sligo team recorded a positive Covid test days after beating Leitrim to clinch promotion from Division 3B.
"As such, a number of close contacts are now in isolation and the complete squad are now undertaking tests for the virus and are following HSE and GAA guidelines," read a Sligo statement.
"Sligo GAA county board officers have liaised with GAA officials in Croke Park since this issue arose. Both Derry and Leitrim have been informed of the case."
Also yesterday, Waterford's footballers pulled out of their Division 4 trip to Antrim but the game is back on after the Saffrons offered to move the game to Dundalk instead.
