GAA Special Congress set to be held in Croke Park next month

The GAA's Special Congress is set to take place on October 23 in Croke Park, the association announced.

The decision was set after meetings of both An Coiste Bainistíochta and Ard Chomhairle.

10 motions which were deferred from the GAA Annual Congress in February will be debated and voted on at next month's event.

A motion concerning structural changes to the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship will be likely to be under the most scrutiny as there has been plenty of discourse among spectators regarding the need for a more balanced Championship format.

The GPA are said to favour a league-championship system, while a new option set to come into play is a provincial system of four groups of eight teams.

If neither of the new options gain enough support at the event, the choice for delegates will revert to either the conventional qualifiers or the Super 8s which replaced them.

Meanwhile, a proposal to permit sponsorship on the sleeves of GAA player and replica jerseys has been approved.

Sleeve sponsorship has taken hold in professional sports in recent years and this approval within the GAA adds to potential revenue for county setups.
