GAA Special Congress pass motion to overhaul All-Ireland championships

The GAA’s Management Committee has been given the power to overhaul this year’s Championships as required.

It follows an unprecedented Special Congress, held remotely this afternoon, with the motion passed unopposed.

The Management Committee will have licence over a 12-week period from the middle of next month to redraw the flagship competitions as it sees fit as the GAA hopes for a green light to resume action at some stage this year amid the coronavirus crisis.

The GAA shut down all games and activities on March 12 and admitted earlier this week that the hurling and football Championships are unlikely to get underway before the beginning of July - at the earliest.

That means that the competitions will have to be restructured, with the round robin phases virtually certain to fall, forcing the GAA to call the Special Congress in order to form “a temporary governance structure in emergency situations”.

Management’s decisions with regard to what the Championships will look like will largely be dictated by how much time there is to play with, on the presumption that the GAA is given permission to stage them later in the year, which certainly isn’t a given.
