GAA press ahead with Bloody Sunday centenary commemoration plans

The GAA is pressing ahead with plans to complete the infamous Dublin-Tipperary game on the 100th anniversary of Bloody Sunday.

The centenary of the atrocities at Croke Park which saw 14 people killed by British forces falls on November 21 which, as things stand, will be Leinster football final day.

The provincial decider will be preceded by a ceremonial finishing of the game which was started at Croke Park that day 100 years ago before being so violently interrupted. The game will involve “available county or club players”, subject to restrictions.

“The event will feature a special narration that focuses on the memory of each of the 14 lives lost at Croke Park 1920 with a torch lighting ceremony, a wreath-laying and a musical performance by Colm Mac Con Iomaire,” a GAA statement outlined.

A collection of specially commissioned videos focusing on the victims was released online today and will run over the next 10 weeks, starting with the profiling of Dubliner Jane Boyle (played by actress Sorcha Fahy), who died in the crowd at Croke Park a few days short of what should have been her wedding day.

Other initiatives ahead of the 100th anniversary include ‘The Bloodied Field’ podcast, a television documentary which will be aired on RTE in November, a collaboration with the Abbey Theatre and the ongoing project of erecting and restoring headstones at the victims’ graves, with a new memorial also planned for Croke Park.
