GAA president's blunder during trophy presentation has fans in fits of laughter

GAA President Larry McCarthy made a fairly noticeable blunder during the trophy presentation following Sunday's All-Ireland Junior Club Football Championship final at Croke Park.

Kerry side Fossa defeated Stewartstown Harps of Tyrone in a fiery decider, during which six players were sent off.

Ahead of Fossa captain Paudie Clifford lifting the cup, McCarthy introduced the Kerry star as Paudie Fitzgerald and needless to say a number of fans took to social media after hearing the blunder.

One wrote: "An awful blunder...I wonder who was the Paudie Fitzgerald the president was thinking about when handing over the cup?"

Another commented: "Did Paudie Fitzgerald pick up the cup because Paudie Clifford was sent off?"

Someone else added: "Spectacular own goal by the President of @officialgaa for his introduction of Captaen Fossa, Paudie Fitzgerald!"

Joe Brolly tweeted: "Hilarious, manic junior final capped by the Uachtarain announcing the winning captain as Paudie Fitzgerald & Paudie Clifford thanking the referee & officials in his speech 'until my sending off which was unbelievable'.

But the blunder ended up being overshadowed by Clifford's acceptance speech as he took aim at referee Thomas Murphy over his sending off towards the end of the game.

After praising the collective efforts of the Fossa team, Clifford stated: “To the referee and his officials, obviously it was a tough game to ref there at the end.

“A good job, other than at the end when I was wrongly sent off. It was unbelievable how I was sent off, but a great job all around.”
