A Galway GAA legend's son has passed away, just over a year after his own son’s tragic death.

Galway footballer Seán Purcell's son Robert died on Monday, February 27.

Robert had lost his son Rory, who tragically passed away in February 2022, and is mourned by his wife Tessa, his children Amy and Aran, as well as his siblings and extended family, Galway Beo reported.

Seán Purcell, from Tuam, played in the backline and was a star in Gaelic Football over a 14-year career with the Maroon, in which he notched one All-Ireland and seven Connacht championships.

His playing time spanned three decades, from the 1940s to the 1960s.

Seán, who died at 76 in 2005, was included in the 1984 GAA Centenary Football team and the GAA ‘Team of the Millennium’.

He was also named by the Sunday Tribune as being in the top 125 most influential footballers in history.

Tributes have been pouring in for Robert following his death. One condolence said: “One of a kind. RIP.”

Another wrote: “So sad. Condolences to his family. May the Lord have mercy on his soul and may his soul rest in peace”.

Robert's reposing is to take place in Stafford's Funeral Home, Portmarnock, on Wednesday March 8 from 5pm to 7pm.

Removal to the Church of the Assumption, Howth, on Thursday morning, for 10am Funeral Mass, followed by a cremation, which is private for the family.
