GAA legend Davy Fitzgerald 'delighted' with how long Ireland's Fittest Family has lasted

GAA legend Davy Fitzgerald admitted he thought Ireland’s Fittest Family would only last “a season or two”.

But the well-known coach said he’s delighted the show has lasted as long as it has.

Speaking to the RTE Guide, Davy said he thought they’d get “a year or two out of Fittest Family, but we’re still going ten years on.

“It’s phenomenal, we’re delighted.”

The Waterford hurling manager said he reckons the appeal is that you can watch “with anyone, of any age. It appeals to different ages in different ways.

“And you can take part at any age; we’ve had people in their 50s. That’s our motto, life is short enough so don’t hang up the boots too early.”

Davy returns to our screens on Wednesday on RTE One with his second series of Davy’s Toughest Team, which sees the new group travel to Iceland.

“The end-challenge with this show, going to Iceland, was: when the going gets tough, just don’t give in.

“That happened to me over there, it got tough but I followed my own advice and stuck with it. Hopefully, that rubs off on the lads.

“Iceland wasn’t a holiday, it was a really tough challenge for us all – me included – the kind of thing it’d be easy to pull out of.

“We were telling the boys, when life gets really hard and you want to stop: don’t. Get through it.

“It’ll be better on the other side. Iceland itself was incredible, it got pretty emotional one or two times towards the end,” he added.
