GAA hoping for International Rules Series return in 2020

The International Rules Series could return for 2020 but the GAA have confirmed there will be no renewal this year.

Ireland have faced Australia in the combined Gaelic football/AFL rules since its first staging in 1984.

Australia won the The Cormac McAnallen Cup when the series was last played in November 2017.

But plans for the next series appear to be in the air with the GAA looking into playing the two Tests in the USA next year.

A GAA statement to RTE Sport said: "Last November, the GAA President, John Horan, met with representatives of the AFL in Sydney to discuss the future of the International Rules series, with both the GAA and the AFL committed to it continuing.

"There were a number of ideas and options discussed, among them the potential of a game taking place in the US in autumn 2019.

"It wasn't possible to make sufficient progress to fix a date in the calendar of both associations for 2019.

"However, it is hoped that there will be a staging of the International Rules series in 2020 and that a schedule can be agreed to stage the matches over a fixed time period."
