GAA fans all saying the same thing as Proposal B rejected in Special Congress

The majority of GAA fans were left disappointed this afternoon as the proposal to revamp the All-Ireland Football Championship was defeated.

A special congress vote to determine the future of the football season had been at the forefront of debate for weeks as GAA president Larry McCarthy, the GPA and several counties all backed the radical proposal.

And although some were happy with the result, many fans were left disheartened and disappointed at the prospect of a return to the traditional Championship in 2022, taking to social media to air their grievances.

One fan has even turned their back on the sport: "I’m officially stepping down as a supporter of the GAA and I hope inter county players do too. Archaic organisation," they said.

"Can't believe Proposal B didn't get voted in. If you're from Leitrim or Wicklow or Sligo etc. What motivation do you have at all to play for your county?," one fan asked.

One said: "Gutted. Proposal B may not have been perfect but tweaks could have been made down the line. All GAA fans want is fairness and teams at a similar level playing each other.

"80% of Players and 51% of Congress can’t be too far wrong. Hopefully this shows the need for change".

"So disappointed in the result of the Proposal B vote, especially in most reasons given for voting against. Not sure I'm interested in watching any of next season now," a fan said.

After a 74-minute debate on the topic, 85 delegates voted in favour of the ‘League as Championship’ motion and 83 against, leaving the majority just short of 51%.

With 168 delegates present, 101 would have been required to vote in favour in order for it to be introduced.

With proposal A, which would see the provincial structure remain at the heart of the Championship but with counties moving provinces (90% against), also soundly beaten it means that the pre-2018 qualifier system will be in place for 2022, with the Tailteann Cup included for Division Three and Four teams.

There were 22 speakers over the course of the debate, 10 in favour and 12 against, the majority of which hailed from Ulster.
