GAA commentary legend Micheal O'Muircheartaigh gives advice to people cocooning

Legendary commentator Micheal O'Muircheartaigh is urging those advised to cocoon during the Covid-19 pandemic to stay active.

The iconic GAA broadcaster is 89 years old and falls into the category of members of the public who have been advised to cocoon as part of physical distancing measures introduced by the government to combat the spread of the pandemic.

O'Muircheartaigh is using his garden at his Co Kildare home to keep active and exercise at a challenging time for those cocooning.

"I have always been active, but if you take four laps of the garden here you have a mile walked and it's nice to do a few more miles after that - to stay trim and keep fit.

"I also use a piece of elastic to exercise - and it's amazing what you can in terms of stretching with that."

The Kerry native was featured on RTE News with his physiotherapist son Eamon, demonstrating some simple exercise techniques that can be done at home.

Eamon advised: "I'd suggest every day to at least do some cardiovascular exercise.

"That might mean doing five or six laps of your back garden, or if you don't have a back garden to do a couple of laps of the kitchen or dining room, or up and down the stairs."
