GAA clubs and supporters fly their colours in respect to Detective Garda Colm Horkan

GAA clubs and supporters around the country flew their colours today as a mark of respect for Detective Garda Colm Horkan.

The brave officer was shot dead in Castlerea, Co Roscommon on Wednesday night.

A state funeral was held for him in St James' Church in Charlestown, Co Mayo today.

And throughout the country GAA clubs, supporters and many sports organisations flew their colours at half mast in remembrance of Colm.

The Detective Garda is the 89th member of An Garda Siochana in the history of the organisation to have died while on duty.

Nicknamed Bear by those who knew and loved him, Colm was shot dead with his own service weapon on Wednesday night.

Colm was much loved both in his home of Charlestown and in Ballaghdereen in Co Roscommon where he served as a garda for 13 years.

Sadness has overwhelmed both towns as the nation mourns the death of the brave officer.

Colm was a talented GAA player who played for his local club Charlestown Sarsfield from a young age.

Mayo GAA asked clubs and supporters to fly their club or county colours in memory of Detective Colm Horkan at midday when a minute's silence was also observed nationwide.

They posted on Facebook: "As a mark of respect to Detective Garda Colm Horkan and to support his family as best we can during this time we are asking our clubs and supporters to fly their club or county colours tomorrow at 12pm. #ColoursforColm #RIPColm."
