GAA club chairman, 72, goes in goal to help his side to victory

A 72-year-old GAA club chairman helped his side to victory in Co Laois on Tuesday night.

Rathdowney-Errill chairman Tim Barry played in goal for his club's Laois Junior C football championship clash with Annanough.

Barry's services were called upon due to Rathdowney only having 12 players and needing 13 for the game to go ahead.

He only conceded two goals as his club won by 8-08 to 2-02.

Barry told RTE: "We won it anyway but not with much help from me.

"I only let it in two. One of them was a penalty, the other one I got a hand to it and it hit the post. It went back out and one of their lads buried it."

Barry said it "must be around 50 years" since he last played football.

He added: "I never played much football, I was a hurler.

"I wouldn’t think I’d be in goal next time, I’d have to fight for my place!"
